Data Mastering Interface
A desktop interface to review and manage datasets
Problem Statement
A data management company sought our assistance in designing a platform for subject matter experts and assignment managers to review pairs and clusters of data.
Objective
Our team set out to design an interface that would allow teams of experts to review datasets. These data sets may be merged, alerted, or removed, depending on the information. Our platform would alleviate any unnecessary burdens of data management and provide a pleasant and delightful visual experience for an otherwise monotonous task.
Client & User
Our designs were intended to provide robust solutions for data management for our client. While we were presenting this information to a data management company, the ultimate users of this interface would be their subject matter experts and assignment managers.
Data Management Design Team: Assignment managers generally oversaw several sets of data and would assign data sets to the appropriate subject matter expert. They needed to be able to alert their teams to new datasets, remind them of ongoing ones, communicate with their teams, and track progress.

Subject Matter Experts: Subject matter experts were assigned several datasets to review. Each subject matter expert may have one or more unique specialties. They needed to be able to review new datasets, work on ongoing ones, communicate with their teammates and managers, and reassign to other subject matter experts if they felt that review by another expert would be more appropriate.

Video Walk-through
This brief video was created to provide a holistic explanation of the use and design process of this mobile application.
This video provides:
an overview of the project brief,
a walk-through of the clickable prototype, and
insights behind design decisions.
Process
To begin this project, we interviewed several team members from our data management client. We learned that the two primary users, subject matter experts and assignment managers, had unique roles within data management that would warrant two distinct interfaces.
For the purposes of this portfolio piece, we will focus our review on the interface for the subject matter expert.
Agile & flexible data management & review: This interface provides features for the subject matter expert to view datasets in several formats which are already familiar to many digital natives (gallery, carousel, and list views)
Consistent navigation & progress tracking: Side navigation at the left provides consistent guidance throughout the changing view of data. And a subject matter expert could review their daily/weekly progress.
Robust notification, alerts, & messages: Notifications and an account button at the top right provide familiar options to review messages and incoming alerts
As a Subject Matter Expert, I want to be able to:
know when I’ve been assigned a task so that I can answer it in a timely manner
save assignments and answers so that I can complete my assignments as my schedule allows
alert the Assignment Manager that I do not have the knowledge to answer the question.
access my assignments easily so that I can answer them in a timely manner
review all relevant information so I can accurately answer my assignment
keep track of my assignments so that I can look back on past answers
Design Iterations
Upon reflection of the design, there are several opportunities for further development. Some potential features to explore include:
adding accounts for family members—Catalina could contact both of her daughters healthcare providers from the same platform,
incorporating a notifications system—Catalina could receive a reminder to schedule her next visit, and
adding a section to track or connect health measurements—Catalina could share her fitbit steps with her doctor.

Next Steps
To bring this project forward, next steps include:
Interviewing potential users—data management teams, both assignment managers and subject matter experts
Testing and conducting usability assessments of the clickable prototype with potential users
Iterating a clickable prototype based on testing feedback
